The Empress of Science

It is a science that people in this world need and depend on. It gives rise to shapes, numbers, statistics and physics. It is a discipline of science that they said that is eternally true. This is used every day in markets, schools, community and in the world. It is so important that people called it the Empress of Science and the Language of the Universe. This discipline is Mathematics.

In the documentary of BBC the Story of Math, Marcus du Sautoy toured us in the world of mathematics. The first part of the four-part series started with the history of mathematics. Marcus started the journey in ancient Egypt. It amazed me how simple life problems gave rise to number system. I was also amazed of how brilliant and creative they are in coming up of symbols and how these symbols evolved through time. His next stop was Babylon and he narrated how the people discovered measurement. He also told the story of base 60. I was amazed again. He then went to the land of the Greeks where he introduced to us, Archimedes and Plato who were behind some ideas and discoveries in mathematics.

I am not a fan of documentaries since I find it boring however as I watched this film I did not get bored and instead I find it fascinating. I love how the narrator toured us in the history of Mathematics. He is enthusiastic and you can really see his love and passion for math. His enthusiasm adds color and brightness to the movie. I like the storyline of the movie. I like it that they kept it not too long and not too short. It makes us viewers to stay watching the film and not get bored. I also appreciate that they used visual effects in some scenes. It was fun to watch.  The film is excellent and it helped me to appreciate math more and understand that is it not simply about formulas, numbers and shapes but there is more to that. I am really looking forward to the next part of this series.
